Wisdom Teeth Removal in Garland, TX
Wisdom teeth are the third molars at the very back of the mouth, and they often do not have enough room to come in properly. When they grow in crooked or stay trapped under the gums and bone (impacted), they can cause pain, infection and damage to nearby teeth. At Care N Cure Dental in Garland, TX, Dr. Faisal Rehman, D.M.D., removes wisdom teeth in our office, including fully bony impacted third molars, so many patients do not need a referral to a separate surgeon.
Signs your wisdom teeth may need to come out
- Pain or pressure at the back of the jaw
- Red, swollen or bleeding gums behind the last molars
- Bad taste or bad breath that keeps coming back
- Trouble opening your mouth fully
- Food getting trapped around a partly erupted tooth
- Crowding or damage to the teeth next to them
Some wisdom teeth cause no symptoms but still show problems on an x-ray. Regular checkups let us spot issues early.
What happens during wisdom tooth removal
- Exam and x-rays to see the position of each tooth and its roots.
- Comfort first. The area is fully numbed. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and minimal sedation are available for patients who feel anxious.
- Removal. Erupted teeth are removed gently; impacted teeth may be removed in sections through a small opening in the gum.
- Recovery instructions so you know exactly how to care for the area at home.
Recovery after wisdom teeth removal
Most people feel back to normal within a few days to a week. Plan to rest the first day, use ice on the cheek, eat soft foods and avoid straws, smoking and spitting so the healing blood clot stays in place. Call us if you have severe pain that gets worse after a few days, fever or bleeding that will not stop.
Wisdom teeth FAQs
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Wisdom teeth that come in fully, are healthy and can be cleaned well may be kept. We recommend removal when they are impacted, causing problems or likely to damage nearby teeth.
Is wisdom tooth removal painful?
You should not feel pain during the procedure because the area is numbed, and sedation is available. Soreness and swelling afterward are normal and usually improve within a few days.
What is the best age to remove wisdom teeth?
Wisdom teeth are often evaluated in the late teens or early twenties, when the roots are not fully formed and healing tends to be faster. Adults of any age can have them removed when needed.
