When should my child first see a dentist?
Most children should have their first dental visit by their first birthday or within six months of the first tooth coming in. After that, checkups every six months help catch cavities early, when they are small and easy to treat.

Preventing cavities at home
Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, a smear the size of a grain of rice for children under 3 and a pea-sized amount after that. Help young children brush until they can do it well on their own, limit sugary drinks and snacks, and never put a baby to bed with a bottle of milk or juice. Learn more about baby bottle tooth decay.
