Nitrous Oxide and Minimal Sedation in Garland, TX
If dental visits make you anxious, Care N Cure Dental offers two gentle ways to relax: nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and minimal sedation. Dr. Faisal Rehman, D.M.D., is certified to provide nitrous oxide and holds a Level 1 (minimal) sedation permit from the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners. With both options you stay awake, can breathe on your own and can answer questions, but you feel calmer.
Nitrous oxide (laughing gas)
Nitrous oxide is a mild gas mixed with oxygen that you breathe through a small mask over your nose. It starts working within minutes, can be adjusted during the visit and wears off quickly once the gas is turned off and you breathe pure oxygen. Many patients can drive themselves home afterward. It is a common choice for cleanings, fillings and short procedures when nerves are the main problem.
Level 1 minimal sedation
Minimal sedation uses medication taken by mouth to reduce anxiety for longer appointments, such as wisdom teeth removal or implant placement. You remain awake and respond normally, but you feel more relaxed. Because the effects last longer than laughing gas, you will need a responsible adult to drive you home.
Is sedation right for you?
Sedation can help if you have a strong gag reflex, sensitive teeth, trouble getting numb, or have avoided the dentist because of fear. Before recommending it, the dentist reviews your health history and current medications, because some conditions and medicines affect which option is safe. Local anesthetic is still used to numb the treatment area; sedation helps with how you feel, not with numbness.

Frequently asked questions
Will I be asleep during sedation?
No. Care N Cure Dental offers nitrous oxide and Level 1 minimal sedation, and with both you stay awake and can respond, but you feel more relaxed. It does not offer general anesthesia or IV sedation.
Can I drive after laughing gas?
Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes after the gas is turned off, so many patients can drive themselves home. If you take minimal sedation medication, you need someone to drive you.
Is sedation covered by insurance?
Coverage varies. Some dental plans pay part of the cost of nitrous oxide, especially for children. The office checks your plan before treatment.
