Types of Dental Bridges

A missing tooth or teeth can negatively impact your appearance, bite function, and oral health. Fortunately, you can restore your smile with a dental bridge. A dental bridge is a fixed tooth replacement solution. It is an artificial tooth placed in the gap created by a missing tooth. The bridge is anchored to the teeth on either side of the gap. The bridge has artificial teeth, called pontics, and dental crowns. The pontics are usually made of porcelain or ceramic, and the dental crowns are secured to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. There are several types of dental bridges available. Our Dentist in Garland, TX, can help you determine which type is right for you based on the location of the missing tooth and your dental health needs.

Types of Dental Bridges

Traditional Fixed Bridge

A traditional fixed bridge is the most common type of dental bridge. It is a fixed restoration that the dentist cements into place using the natural teeth adjacent to the gap created by the missing tooth or teeth. The bridge consists of an artificial tooth or teeth fused between two crowns. The crowns are cemented to the natural teeth on either side of the gap.

Maryland Bridge

A Maryland bridge is similar to a traditional one but uses metal or porcelain wings instead of dental crowns on each side. The wings are bonded to the back of the abutment teeth. This type of bridge is less invasive than the traditional bridge because less of the natural tooth structure is removed during the procedure.

Cantilever Bridge

A cantilever bridge is used when only one adjacent tooth is available to support the bridge. Instead of a crown, the abutment tooth has a wing on each side. One side of the bridge attaches to the abutment tooth, while the other is attached to the replacement tooth.

The Benefits of Dental Bridges

Restore Your Smile

Missing teeth can cause you to feel self-conscious about your smile. You may feel embarrassed to smile or laugh in public. You may also avoid eating certain foods because you don’t want others to see your teeth. With a dental bridge, you can regain confidence and enjoy smiling again.

Improve Your Oral Health

When a tooth is missing, the neighboring teeth may shift out of place. This can lead to misalignment and other dental problems. A dental bridge can prevent these issues by filling in the gap. It also prevents the remaining teeth from drifting out of position.

Maintain the Shape of Your Face

Your face shape can be affected by tooth loss. Over time, it can change the appearance of your face. A dental bridge can help maintain the shape of your face by preventing bone loss in the jaw.
