Dentures

A denture is a custom-made removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and gum tissue. Dentures help patients chew and speak normally, improve facial appearance and smile, alleviate the sunken look caused by missing teeth, and restore the natural contour of the face.

There are two main types of dentures, including complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Both types of dentures are custom-made in a dental laboratory based on impressions taken of the mouth. Once the denture is completed, it is fitted for the wearer’s mouth.

Types of dentures

Traditional: These are the most common type of denture and are made of either acrylic or porcelain fused to metal. They typically rest on your gums just like your natural teeth, so they’re a great option for replacing multiple teeth. The drawback of traditional dentures is that they can slip out of place when speaking or chewing—something that’s completely natural but can be frustrating nonetheless. Some patients choose to wear adhesive strips with these dentures for extra stability.

Partial: A partial denture replaces some missing teeth and is attached to a metal framework. It fills the gaps in your smile and prevents other teeth from shifting out of place. Like traditional dentures, the fit may not be perfect at first, but your prosthodontist can make adjustments as needed. Unlike full dentures, a partial denture only covers some of your teeth, which helps preserve the jawbone and prevent facial sagging.

Implant-supported: This type of prosthetic is secured to the jaw using dental implants. This not only makes them more functional than standard dentures but also allows them to look and function more like your real teeth. Implant-supported dentures are placed over a series of appointments. First, implants are surgically placed in the gums, where they will eventually fuse with the jaw bone. Then, once your mouth has healed, you return to have your permanent dentures placed over the implants. While implant-supported dentures cost more than ordinary ones, many patients feel like the cost is worth it for the increased comfort and improved appearance they provide.

Immediate: As the name suggests, immediate dentures can be worn immediately after the removal of natural teeth. If you’ve lost a lot of teeth, this can be a great benefit since you won’t have to worry about being without teeth while your mouth heals. However, immediate dentures don’t require as much healing time as the others do

Benefits of dentures

Pros of dentures include the fact that they are an affordable option for multiple missing teeth and they don’t require many or any modifications to be made to your existing teeth. The treatment process is also easy and comfortable; many patients say that their denture procedure was easier than they expected. The materials used in the making of dentures are also designed to match the color of your natural teeth so that your transition to wearing dentures will be as seamless as possible.
