Tooth decay is an infection of the tooth. It occurs when certain types of bacteria break down sugars and starches from the food you eat. The bacteria create acids that attack the teeth. This attack breaks down the enamel and dentin layers of the teeth, resulting in dental caries.

What is a root canal procedure?

A root canal is a type of endodontic treatment that is used to clean out an infected tooth. The process involves removing the damaged area of the tooth and replacing it with a filling material. It is often performed when a tooth is badly decayed or has become infected due to a chip, crack, or other injuries. We use gentle techniques to ensure the procedure is comfortable for our patients.

If left untreated, an infection can spread to the surrounding teeth and even into the gums. This can cause further damage to the teeth and gums as well as tooth loss. During a root canal procedure, the diseased pulp is removed, and the inner portion of the tooth is cleaned, disinfected, and sealed. This will help to prevent future infections from occurring.

What are the reasons for a root canal procedure?

Dentists recommend a root canal due to an infection or deep cavity that has reached the inner tooth pulp layer. Once the infection reaches the pulp, it can damage the nerves and cells inside the tooth, causing severe pain. This pain can make it difficult to chew normally and even lead to tooth loss if left untreated for too long. In some cases, patients will experience no symptoms at all but will still have the infection present in their system. In these cases, the dentist will recommend undergoing the procedure to prevent future complications.

How does a root canal procedure work?

During a consultation with your dentist, we will discuss your treatment options and determine which type of treatment best suits your needs and budget. If your dentist recommends a root canal, they will complete X-rays and examine your teeth carefully to determine the precise location of your decay or infection. 

To begin, your dentist will inject the area with a local anesthetic to prevent you from feeling any pain during the procedure. Then, they will use specialized tools to access the inside of your tooth and remove the inner pulp and nerves. They’ll clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth and then fill the area to prevent further infection or decay. Finally, they will seal the tooth with either a dental crown or a filling.

Your dentist will prescribe pain medication and a mouth rinse to help you manage the pain during the healing process. After a couple of weeks of healing, you’ll be able to resume your daily activities without restrictions.
