Common dental emergencies
If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, it’s important
to seek dental care immediately. While some emergencies can be delayed until your
regular dentist is available, others are time-sensitive and require emergency
intervention. Here are some common reasons that you might need to see an emergency
dentist right away:
- Toothache: Severe tooth pain is a surefire indicator
that something is wrong with your tooth or gums. If you notice throbbing, shooting
pains when you chew, drink hot or cold temperatures, or even breathe through your
mouth, it’s important that you see a dentist right away. Until you see us, you
should avoid eating anything too hot or too cold, as this can aggravate your
sensitivity.
- Broken tooth: A broken tooth is a common injury that
can be painful to deal with. Since a broken tooth leaves the inner part of the tooth
exposed, food particles can easily become lodged in the nooks of the chip. This can
lead to serious pain and infection if not addressed properly. If you’ve recently
suffered a fall or blow to the face, it’s crucial that you see your dentist as soon
as you can. In the meantime, apply a cold compress to the area to help reduce any
swelling and keep the piece of the tooth as clean as possible by rinsing it with
salt water.
- Knocked-out tooth: The prompt treatment of a
knocked-out tooth can mean the difference between saving and losing a tooth. If you
have knocked out a tooth, call us right away so that we can help determine the best
course of action to take. It is best not to try and place the tooth back in its
socket yourself. Instead, please visit us at the earliest with the knocked-out tooth
placed in a glass of milk, and we may be able to help you save it.
